About Dr. Nelson
Dr. Eric Nelson always knew he wanted to be an oral surgeon. With a keen interest in medicine and a natural calling to help others, Dr. Nelson finds it very rewarding to see his patients flourish as a result of treatment. He successfully ran his own practice for 15 years before creating Whitewater Oral Surgery Group in 2014 with Dr. Kempers.
Dr. Nelson’s personal approach to care means his patients are treated with honesty, integrity, and compassion. Patients who come to Dr. Nelson can feel comfortable about their treatment and trust that they are in exceptional hands.
Education and Residency
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah and attended dental school at the University of Iowa. Dr. Nelson went on to earn a medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed both his general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery residencies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he gained hands-on surgical experience in a hospital-based setting.
In 2005, Dr. Nelson was one of four surgeons chosen to perform cleft lip and palate surgery for orphans at Chinese Children’s Adoption International in Xining, China.
Certifications and Memberships
Dr. Nelson is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), which holds him to the highest standard of care. He had to undergo rigorous peer evaluations and demonstrate adequate knowledge, training, and professionalism in order to achieve and maintain certification status.
Dr. Nelson has served as the Idaho delegate to the American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also assists with anesthesia peer review in the state of Utah. Specializing in oral implantology, Dr. Nelson lectures both locally and nationally on dental implant and bone grafting techniques. He is also a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI).
Dr. Nelson is also a member of St. Luke’s facial trauma team and other professional organizations, the American Dental Association (ADA), and the Idaho State Dental Association.
Outside the Office
Dr. Nelson has three adult children and lives in Boise with his wife. Together, they enjoy family outings, running, skiing, fishing, and traveling. He has participated in the Boston Marathon four times and loves DIY projects and home improvements.
