Preparing for Your Surgery
A little planning can make a big difference in your experience. We recommend taking these steps in the days leading up to your procedure to ensure a calm and positive journey.
- Arrange for a Companion: If you are receiving IV sedation or general anesthesia, you must have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment, drive you home, and stay with you for the remainder of the day.
- Plan Your Recovery Space: Create a comfortable place to rest at home. Have pillows ready to keep your head elevated, and make sure blankets are nearby.
- Stock Your Kitchen: Go grocery shopping for soft, easy-to-eat foods before your surgery. Items like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and protein shakes are great options for the first few days of recovery.
- Pick Up Prescriptions: Fill any prescriptions your surgeon has ordered ahead of time, so they are ready for you when you get home.
The Day Before Your Surgery
Your health and safety are our top priorities. To prepare your body for surgery and help prevent complications, please follow these instructions carefully.
- Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Please refrain from drinking alcohol or smoking for at least 24 hours before your surgery, as they can interfere with healing.
- Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Rest is essential for helping your body prepare for the procedure. Aim for a full night of restful sleep.
- Confirm Your Transportation: Double-check your ride arrangements with your companion for the following day.
The Day of Your Surgery
On the day of your appointment, please follow these final steps to ensure your procedure goes smoothly.
- Follow Fasting Instructions: If you are receiving sedation, do not eat or drink anything, including water, for at least eight hours before your appointment. If you must take daily medication, you may do so with a small sip of water.
- Dress for Comfort: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and a short-sleeved shirt. Choose flat, supportive shoes and avoid wearing jewelry, contact lenses, or nail polish.
- Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly right before leaving for your appointment to help reduce bacteria in your mouth.
- Arrive a Little Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes before your scheduled time to complete any final paperwork without feeling rushed.
